The Larry King Murder: Looking Back at a Gay Teen’s Tragic Death

The Larry King Murder is the most prominent gay-biased crime since Matthew Shepard was killed in 1998. Larry King was shot in the head on a February morning in a classroom at E.O. Green School. This Newsweek story looks back at the tragedy that occurred, providing details on Larry King, the person. The story portrays 15-year old Larry as a troubled youth, who acted out frequently and lived in a group home for several months prior to his murder. King was openly gay and other students often teased him because of his nonconformist behavior and style of dress. The story paints a chilling picture of the day of the murder that sends chills up my spine. Several days later, a march organized by 2 high school students for Larry King was held in Oxnard (the city where Larry went to school)--1000 people showed up in the march. The surprisingly large turnout (they expected 200-300) was a public plea for tolerance on school campuses for those who are different.
