Amp Up Before You Score App Distasteful

PepsiCo, in an effort to promote a new energy drink, Amp, has created a free Iphone app, the Amp Up Before You Score.
It is apparently meant to help caffeine addicted socially awkward Iphone addicts to hook up with twenty-four crass stereotypes of women, including the Sorority girl, Punk Rock Chick and my personal favorite, the nerdy girl. In the app, guys can select the stereotype, and then quickly look up information that would be beneficial for him to know when trying to seal the deal, such as decoding her Greek letters, trivia about punk bands and quotations stolen from scholarly books.
While some can see the ingenuity of the app, the basic fact is it promotes negative stereotypes of women, viewing them as one-dimensional objects of lust, while also reinforcing the idea that men are only looking to score with women for one night in order to be cool and hip. The worst part of it all is that there is a section where the Amp addict may “tally his score” and then even brag about hooking up with the chick via Facebook, Twitter, and all other networks he can think to post intimate details of his night, whether real or imagined.
There has been much outrage over the app, which of course, has prompted it to become only more popular. Pepsico sent out apologies for bad taste to followers on Twitter; however, you can still download it for free, making this apology almost as hollow as Chris Brown’s. In this age of social media and product integration into our daily lives, is it really worth a person’s reputation to sell a few extra energy drinks?
