Mammograms May Boost Cancer Risk in High-Risk Women

A new study by the University Medical Center Groningen, in the Netherlands suggests that the low-dose of radiation exposed from mammography may actually boost the risk of breast cancer in high-risk women.High-risk women include:

  • women who were exposed (to mammogram radiation) before the age of 20
  • women who have/had family members with breast cancer

Even though women under 30 in the United States don't routinely get mammograms, it is important to know that young women are more radiation-sensitive! Keep yourself well-informed ladies and keep talking to your doctor !
