Heidi Montag, The Hills, and plastic surgery, oh my!

Last night, the first episode of The Hills last season premiered on MTV, and I watched it because I wanted to get a good look at Heidi Montag. What she did to her body has boggled my mind for months and I thought that watching her on The Hills would help me better understand why she felt the need to get plastic surgery at such a young age. Sadly, watching the show didn’t do anything for me, but it did make me wonder, why do people with a lot of plastic surgery always look the same? And what has someone with a lot of plastic surgery ever contributed to society? Have you noticed that people who get plastic surgery all end up looking the same? People who have had a lot of plastic surgery look EXACTLY like other people who have had a lot of plastic surgery. Flip through the channels to any reality show and you will see what I am talking about. It is as if women who want work done walk into a plastic surgeon’s office with the same exact checklist of procedures they want. From looking at images of Heidi Montag, Joan Rivers, Janice Dickinson and Kathy Girffin, I can imagine the checklist might look something like this:

    1. Abnormally large and perky boobs. 2. Super skinny and slightly sloping nose. 3. Extra pouty lips. 4. High and pronounced cheeks. 5. Freakishly tight and wrinkle-free face and neck.

There is something so wrong and unsexy about having a lot of plastic surgery. I don’t mean to give the whole “it’s what’s on the inside that counts” spiel but it’s true. Your mental health and what you do in your community is way more valuable and important than your looks will ever be. If I were to be famous, I would choose to be like Alice Waters or M.I.A. because they are real people who have made an impact on society. What has Heidi Montag or Joan Rivers ever done to benefit society? Nothing! I would rather look back at my life and be proud of my accomplishments and how I affected other people than how good I looked for a few years. At the end of the day we are all going to get old and wrinkly anyways; therefore. it is more important to make your life meaningful by doing things that will make a difference. Find something you care about and get involved, because unlike a botched nose job, you will never regret helping to improve the lives of other people.
