Youth organizers win! Oakland schools demilitarize!

Thanks to student-led organizing efforts, students in the Oakland Unified School District have won the right to be protected from military recruiters. Last week on May 12th the OUSD Board of Education voted to pass the Student Privacy and Equal Access Resolution. The resolution gives students the chance to opt-out of a new military recruiting database that is a privacy nightmare. The Youth Manifesto Campaign took nearly three years to achieve success. Oakland Unified School District is now the first and only district in the country to have a policy offering students the chance to OPT OUT of JAMRS, the private recruitment databse.
