16 and LOVED!!! A New Response to MTV's "No Easy Decisions"

I’ve been meaning to blog on 16 and Pregnant forever… it’s been in the back of my mind since Season 1 made a BIG splash in the world of teen sexual health and pop culture. The thing is, there has been SO much hype about it – it seems like People magazine features Maci or Megan every week – I didn’t know what I could add! Until now… the latest episode (aired 12/28/10) was something ENTIRELY different. “No Easy Decision” featured Markai Durham and two other young women who had had abortions. It sparked a major media storm and critical voices, but it also motivated a fabulous Bay Area organization (and one that I happen to volunteer for), Exhale, to put together the 16 and Loved Campaign… designed to spread “unconditional love and support for women who have had an abortion”.

The whole idea was A. its super tough and brave to go on MTV in front of everyone you know, and tell the world about your abortion experience, and B. if we can make those girls (women!) feel loved, respected and appreciated, maybe it will become less scary to tell your story. The response was great! The 16 and Loved website had hundreds of total strangers posting messages like this one:

“Unfortunately we still live in a world where it is looked down upon but hopefully shows like this will help to open up society’s mind and get more people to talk about it. I love the courage and bravery every woman has shown sharing her story. I send lots of love to these girls and wish everyone happy healthy lives!!”

In case you haven’t seen the show – watch it here. If you are a California teen who has had an abortion, and you want to talk to someone (safe, confidential and judgment free) call Exhale at 1.866.4exhale or check out their website. If you are pregnant or think you might be, and need someone to talk over your options with, check out your local teen clinic or call Backline at 1.888.493.0092.
