Glee Getting It on for the "First Time"

Glee recently aired its “First Time” episode.

For those of you who missed it, the show focused on a school production of “The West Side Story”, as the backdrop to the story of various high schoolers considering whether to have sex for the first time. The story starts out rocky: Finn gets upset when he finds out Rachel wants to have sex only so she can act better in the play and Kurt rejects a drunken Blaine when he tries to seduce him in the backseat of a car. By the end of the show, both couples base their decisions to have sex on love.

How do you think Glee handled the controversial issues of teen and LGBT sex? I personally think they did great and loved how they handled 2 hot topics.

  1. Use protection to prevent pregnancy and STDs! Rachel is prepared when she approaches Finn to have sex (this empowered girl brought condoms!), and Kurt makes it very clear he won’t have sex with Blaine unless they are both sober and using correct judgment.
  2. Communicate and respect your boundaries. At first, Rachel and Blaine seem to want to have sex for the wrong reasons (peer pressure and ulterior motives). Kurt and Finn stand up for themselves and refuse to have sex under these circumstances. Both couples communicate their feelings and perspectives on sex and in the end, both couples end up having protected sex because they are in love.

What did you think about how Glee handled the “first time” issue? What do you think are good things to think about before having sex for the first time?
