Hookup Tip from Kimmy & Silvia

Communicating with your partner is an important step in protecting yourself against STDs, but it’s not always the easiest topic to bring up.  So here are a couple pointers on how to talk to your partner about sex:

  1. First know the facts. Learn about the consequences of STDs or how having unprotected sex can cause an unplanned pregnancy.
  2. Plan what to say. Difficult conversations can be, well, difficult.  One way to prepare is by writing down some important points about why you think getting tested is a good idea.  You can also prepare by finding the nearest clinic here.
  3. Pick a good time to talk. Find some “alone time” so there’s no pressure to rush.  Pick a place where you feel comfortable, and where the conversation won’t be interrupted.
  4. Be bold!  Start the conversation and know that you are doing the best thing to protect yourself and your partner.
  5. Listen.  Maybe your partner was worried about bring up STD testing with you as well!  But if he or she seems hesitant about getting tested you can always suggest…
  6. Get tested together.  Tell your partner about your research and where to find the nearest clinic.  Stand up for what you believe in and protect your health.
