Off to College: Our Teen Blogger Takes Sex Ed from High School to College!

The transition from a high school student to a college student is very interesting. Especially when we're talking about sex, love, lust, and education. Back at my high school, we didn't have sex education when I first arrived. I was completely shocked because of how STD rates are rising among teens, as are pregnancy rates. So I called up a local Planned Parenthood and had them come and present. At college however, where I am still somewhat shocked at the lack of information my peers hold today, learning sex education is up to only one person. YOU! If you want to receive or gather information about something, you have to search for it on your own.

After getting accepted to HSU, one of the first addition that I made to my room was a sign on my window that exclaims, "Free condoms and lube here!" I felt that since I brought with me boxes and boxes of condoms, I might as well put them to use. [not to mention that sex education is my passion.] And one of the great things about college [check to see if yours has the same rules] is that passing out condoms on campus is totally legal. Sooo RAD, right?

The first few days, I watched people passing by my room, staring at the sign with either questioning looks or giggling. A couple of students even came up to the window and asked if the sign was a joke. I immediately informed them that it was not a joke by slipping them a handful of condoms and lube from my window corner. I told them that if they ever need any, they now know where to get them, and to spread the word.

The next few weeks up until now have been pretty exciting. Especially when at 2 am, I get knocks from students asking for condoms. Sometimes they happen to be under the influence, and if I see that they are, I stop before handing condoms out and tell them that I'm glad they thought twice about using protection, but to think again before doing something stupid and that they would regret, like having sex drunk. Sometimes they laugh it off and walk away with their goodies, and other times they give me a look like, "You're right." However, when they walk off, it's not my job to see where their feet, and hormones, take them. All I can do is wish for the best and smile about having provided protection.

So remember that whatever age you are or school you attend, it's good and extremely helpful to be prepared and to take caution. You may know where you've been, but you don't really know where that hot girl/guy on campus has been. Wrap it up!
