3 Tips to Give Your Parents on Having "The Talk"

By Arlington, Peer Health Educator

Talking to your parents about sex isn't easy for anyone, not even for them! If you want to get the topic out in the open but don't feel like starting the conversation, you can share these tips with your parents. You could even leave this page open on your home computer for your parent or guardian to "accidentally" see to get the ball rolling. Here are my tips for parents:

Step 1: Get comfortable.

This is probably the most awkward conversation you can have with your children but it is also the most important, so get comfortable because there will be a lot of questions.

Step 2: Don’t just talk, listen as well.

This is one of the most important factors because this can make the entire conversation more strenuous than it has to be. Just try to keep in mind that your teen is an emerging adult with both questions and opinions and they should be treated like one.

Step 3: Show that you understand and value their point of view

This is key because it helps the conversation get over those rough patches and go along more smoothly.
And remember, talking about sex doesn't mean you're telling us it's ok to have sex. We get it!
