What all Guys Need to Know about HPV

By Joe

Fellas! Bros! Homies! This blog is strictly aimed at you and created for you to get the proper knowledge needed about the HPV vaccine. I don’t want you to feel pressured to rush out and get vaccinated but I do find it important for you to have the proper knowledge about the risk of HPV and how easy it is to prevent it. In the end the decision is up to you (remember, you have rights when it comes to seeking sensitive services like the HPV vaccine even if you're under 18).

Let’s begin with some basic facts:

  • HPV stands for Human Papillomavirus. There are over 150 types of this virus, but only a few of those cause genital warts. Other types of HPV can cause certain types of cancer, including mouth and throat cancer.
  • The HPV vaccine protects you from getting the types of HPV that cause genital warts and cancer. It comes in three doses (three shots in total).
  • HPV can be spread through any skin-to-skin contact with infected areas, as well as from oral, vaginal, or anal sex.
  • Because HPV can be spread through skin-to-skin contact (like making out without clothes on), using condoms might not fully protect you. That's another reason why you should get the HPV vaccine AND use condoms to prevent other STDs like HIV.
  • It's best to get the vaccine between ages 11-12 (before you have sex!) but guys can get the vaccine up to age 21. (Girls can get it up to age 26).
  • You can get the HPV vaccine without needing your parent's permission and without them being notified. You can also get it for very cheap or free. Learn more here.
