Celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month!

Nearly one out of five Americans experiences a mental health condition, amounting to over 59.3 million Americans. As many continue to be affected by mental health, no matter our background or our circumstances, it is essential to take care of ourselves as well as others. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. As we get close to the end of the month, we must support mental health efforts year-round.

This May’s theme is “In Every Story, There’s Strength,” highlighting the diverse stories that shape one’s mental health, and expressing how, even though mental health is in many people’s lives, people can navigate their mental health journey in many different ways. Each shared story is an example of how there is always recovery, connection, understanding, and hope in every life.

Mental health is crucial for our well-being as it not only affects our minds but also our bodies and the relationships we have around us. Here are ways to support yourself and those you care about around you.

Support Yourself

As everyone’s bodies are different, some methods of improving your mental health may be different for you than it is for another person. One of the leading causes of mental illnesses is stress due to work or school, which is why it is essential to maintain a balance between school and home life. Simple ways that you can improve your mental health are listed below.

  • Sleep healthy amounts every night. Try to maintain a sleep schedule of eight to ten hours each night. If you do not have time, try taking small naps throughout the day.
  • Surround yourself with people you trust and who make you feel good.
  • Avoid alcohol and substance abuse, as that may exacerbate your mental health.
  • Establish boundaries and don’t be afraid of saying no. Whether you do not want to hang out or work, taking a break and taking time for yourself is okay. Hold yourself to your standards rather than anyone else.

Support Others

When you have a healthy mindset, it is essential to uplift those around you by showing that mental health is important. Mental health is one of the most stigmatized types of health, which is why it is vital to show others that you care for them as a person. Listed below are ways that you can support the people around you who may be struggling with mental illness.

  • Listen. It is important to empathize with your friends and family who may be going through difficult times, and let them know that you feel known and loved.
  • Respect the space that they need and ask for. Do not crowd them and force them to tell you what is wrong. Do not rush them and make them want to come to you.
  • Look out for warning signs such as prolonged emotions such as sadness, irritability, and anger; changes in sleeping or eating patterns; and excessive worrying.
  • Provide resources if needed. There is the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline that will connect people to mental health professionals, support groups, and online resources.

Although each person’s journey with mental health is different, there is strength in each unique voice expressed. Whether by sharing your story, advocating for more focus on this topic, or just supporting yourself, you can help break the stigma that many face daily.
