Happy #LovemyLARC Awareness Week! IUDs + implants are safe + effective birth control 4 teens.

Are you looking for a worry-free method of birth control? Have you struggled with forgetting to take the pill at the same time everyday, or simply forgotten to take it altogether? Do you want a birth control method that is super effective AND low effort? If you answered ‘yes’ to one or more of these questions, then you should probably look into getting a LARC.

LARCs, or Long-Acting Reversible Contraception, are over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy, last for several years, and are extremely easy to use. They are available in two forms: the IntraUterine Device (IUD) and the Implant. You can get an IUD or implant inserted by a health care provider and forget about it for the next 3-12 years, depending on which option you choose. They’re reversible – you can have them removed whenever you want to become pregnant or simply want to stop using them. Highly effective, safe, and forgettable – it doesn’t get any better than that!

IUD Quick Facts:

  • They are small “t” shaped devices, about the size of a quarter, inserted in the uterus by a doctor
  • There are four types: ParaGard (copper, non-hormonal); Mirena, Skyla, Liletta (plastic, hormonal)
  • ParaGard lasts up to 12 years
  • Mirena lasts up to 5 years
  • Skyla and Liletta last ups to 3 years

Implant Quick Facts:

  • Tiny plastic rod-shaped device that look like a matchstick
  • Inserted by a clinician in the inner part of the upper arm using a needle
  • One type only: Nexplanon (hormonal)
  • Lasts up to 3 years

You can learn more about the pros, cons, and procedures of using LARCs by visiting our birth control page, or by watching this video. Remember, LARCs only protect against pregnancy. We encourage you to use condoms in order to protect yourself against STDs too.
