June is Pride month!

June is Pride Month Every June, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people and their straight allies around the world celebrate Pride Month with parades, celebrations, and special events. Why Celebrate Pride? Pride celebrations remind the world that LGBT people deserve the same rights and respect as others and that LGBT people should be able to live free from shame or fear. Pride celebrations give straight allies a chance to show their unity with LGBT people and are a time to celebrate racial, ethnic, and other kinds of diversity within the LGBT community. During the month of June you are likely to see symbols of gay pride such as the rainbow flag and the pink triangle. Why June? The Stonewall Riots, the event generally thought of as the start of the gay rights movement began on June 28, 2009. However, 3 years earlier transgender women in San Francisco were already fighting back against police harassment. The story of their resistance was recently made into a film. Getting Involved All month long there are events happening around California to celebrate Pride.
