Care for yourself!

California is currently facing the Coronavirus pandemic, heatwaves, fires, and blackouts while many of you are going back to school virtually. With all of this going on, it is especially important to take care of yourself! We have come up with a few ways to care for your mind, body, and spirit:

Meditate- Take a few minutes to calm your mind by meditating or practicing breathing. There are apps available to help you practice meditation or listen to some mediation or sound bath YouTube videos. If you are short on time, even taking a few deep breaths and focusing on relaxing your body can help reduce stress.

Move your body- In some parts of the state, it may not be possible to exercise outside, but finding a few ways to move your body will help reduce stress and improve your health! Exercise releases endorphins that help us feel better. Things like jumping jacks, yoga, lunges, and pushups can all be done inside, without equipment. Need inspiration? Just put on some music and dance!

Sleep- Teens need between 8-10 hours of sleep every night. Make sure you are getting enough sleep to take care of your body and mind.

Unplug- We are all spending extra time in front of screens these days from Zoom to social media. Take some time to unplug and be away from a screen. Read a book, journal, take up a hobby, listen to music, make art, spend time with your family. Do whatever you enjoy, that doesn’t include looking at your phone or other screen!).

Eat a nourishing meal- Feed your body a meal that will give it nutrients. Think fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. You can try out a new recipe or make a family favorite!

Laugh with friends- We may not be able to be with our friends in person right now but we can be connected virtually! Find ways to connect and laugh with some friends either by calling, texting, video chatting, or sending funny memes or videos. Connecting with friends and laughing are both great ways to take care of yourself!

Reducing stress and practicing self-care are important ways to focus on our health but if you are having physical or mental health issues, it is important to talk to a health care provider. You can always find a clinic near you!
