Don’t be afraid to get birth control! Visit a clinic to find the right method for you.

Ready for sex but not ready to be a parent? Then birth control is a great option for you!

There are many different kinds of birth control, so you want to pick a method that’s based on your needs. There are several categories for birth control that you should know about: long acting reversible, hormonal, and barrier.

One thing to consider is how long you want your birth control to last. Long acting reversible methods for birth control can last from three to ten years, depending on which method you choose. Three kinds have hormones in them: Skyla and Mirena IUDs, and the implant, Nexplanon.  These methods will not protect against HIV or STDs, but are one of the most secure methods for preventing pregnancy since they are 99% effective.

Other hormonal methods can last from a few days to three months, depending if you choose to take a pill, get a shot, apply a patch, or insert a ring. Hormonal methods also have a low failure rate, but they also don’t protect against HIV or STDs. The last birth control method is a barrier method, which includes condoms, cervical caps, spermicides, and sponges.

Don’t forget! Only external and internal condoms protect against HIV and STDs! In order to be completely safe during sex, use condoms in combination with any of the other birth control methods to prevent HIVs and STDs!
