Pain when you pee. Little bumps on your penis, vagina, or anywhere else “down there”. Sores that hurt.
These are all possible symptoms of STDs, or sexually transmitted diseases, a.k.a. infections you can get from sex (oral, anal, or vaginal). But what about when there aren’t any symptoms? Does that mean you’re in the clear? Don’t be so sure!
Lots of STDs can be present without any symptoms. Chlamydia and gonorrhea can cause painful urination or discharge but a lot of the time you might have an STD and not know it.
The best way to deal with this tricky situation? Get tested! Before a new partner, during your annual exam, or after any unprotected sex. Testing, and condoms (male or female), are the best ways to prevent STDs if you are sexually active.
